Best of All Times
My first job out of college was at the Fort Frances Times in Fort Frances, Ont., way up in the province's northwest. I've never been a huge picture guy, but as the only guy on the sports desk I had little choice but to get better in terms of photography. Below is a collection of some of the best photos during my tenure there, which ran from April 2007 to January 2008.
Sunrise on Rainy Lake during the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship on July 26, 2007. My mother liked this photo enough to hang up at work, which is always a good endorsement.
A sudden, short torrential storm cancelled the races at the Emo Speedway on July 14, 2007, but allowed for a rainbow to spring up for a short while. I included this because it feels different from the other photos in the album.
Bob and nephew Rob Crowe at the Kitchen Creek club championship on Sept. 23, 2007. Rob won the whole thing, Bob was a runner up.
The little league championship on June 29, 2007 came down to the bases loaded, and the Fort Frances catcher disagreed with the ump's call of the opposing runner being safe at third on a stolen base. The home team lost to the host team in International Falls, Minn. (just over the river) after a walk loaded the bases, then another brought in the winning run. This photo, it should be noted, did not see print.
The Fort Frances little league team faced the Barwick team on May 17, 2007, and a Fort runner got caught trying to slide into third.
Robbie Earl of the Toronto Marlies beat third-string goaltender Jeff Jakaitis during practice before an exhibition AHL game against the Manitoba Moose in Fort Frances. This is another picture that did not see print.
This motocross racer mugged for the camera while floating over the finish line during a race on Canada Day 2007.
Joe Thrun reeled in a smallmouth bass while Jim Moynagh did net duty on July 28, 2007 on the last day of the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship. The pair went on to win the tournament that afternoon.
Fort High Muskies quarterback Blake Wepruk eyes the field before a pass in the first game of the season against the Sturgeon Heights Huskies on Sept. 7, 2007.
One of the Fort High Muskies adjusts the jersey of the late Ben Klyne, a starting linebacker who died in a car crash over the summer during their first game on Sept. 7, 2007. This made front page of the Times, which wasn't a regular thing being the sports guy.
Zak Sentance of the Thunder Bay Bulldogs, left, fought Logan McDonell of the Fort Frances Jr. Sabres during the Sabres' first ever series, on Sept. 15, 2007.
Children float in the water during gym class in the town pool at the Memorial Sports Centre on May 3, 2007. This made the front page of the Bulletin, which is a smaller tabloid version of the Times published throughout the week, and was probably the first photo I took that people didn't hate.
Joel Ashworth of the Dominos team dribbles the ball upfield during the Ball Blast finals on Aug. 12, 2007.
Kevin Bobczynski of the Fort Frances Muskies boys' hockey team stares down the puck during a game against the Kittson Central Wolfpack on Dec. 15, 2007.
Kevin Gemmell of the Barwick Blue Knights holds off on a low pitch during the first inning of the RRDFL championship game on Aug. 30, 2007. This game featured one of the craziest plays I've seen on a diamond - with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth and the score tied at 2-2, Barwick shortstop Vaughn Wilson, the runner on third base, stole home for the walk-off run amid an intentional walk.
Allison Przybylski, left, and Clara Davis play during Little Rockers night at the Fort Frances Curling Club on Dec. 14, 2007. I probably heard more about this photo than any other during my tenure at the Times.
